WOMEN ARE THE KEY AGENTS OF TRANSFORMATION – Rt. Hon. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu.

women

As we mark International Women’s day, I want to congratulate and celebrate women all over the world. There is no doubt that women are the key agents in achieving the transformational, economic, environmental and social changes required for sustainable development.

In the light of the above, there is the need to guarantee gender equality and empowerment of women especially rural women and girls where the bulk of our women resides. Hence, the need to eliminate discrimination against women and focus on helping them gain full and equal participation in the global development.

Though the proposal for incorporation 35% affirmative action in appointive positions for women in the country into the Constitution did not sail through. We should not relent or despair. We should continue sensitization program in area of appointment of women to positions of responsibility. We must continue to push that men and women, girls and boys should be given equal rights and opportunities to ensure progress for all by ensuring elimination of all forms of cultural and religious practices that tend to inhibit full potential of women and girls.

As we celebrate today, we should not be oblivious of our Women and girls cut down in the front line of troubled areas all over the world.
